Summer for 2019 has finally arrived! With Perth already experiencing 40°C+ days in spring, we’ll be expecting more temperature extremes this summer.
Here are 3 simple tips to get you through this scorching weather.
Beat the heat with outdoor and indoor blinds
Window blinds are a very underrated method for passively lowering heat radiation (sunlight rays) from entering your home in the first place. A lot of heat gets transferred between open windows and interior rooms, so preventing the heat from entering should be your first line of defence. A combination of indoor and outdoor blinds can work wonders as it’ll effectively put your rooms in ‘shade’.
Use your airconditioner efficiently
You don’t need to set your reverse-cycle airconditioner to 18°C to feel cool. Not only will you make your air-conditioner work harder, you’ll be paying for it through high energy use. For every 1°C you set lower on your airconditioner, you could be increasing your energy usage by 10%. Try setting your airconditioner to 24–26°C instead and increase the fan speed; on a hot day this will still feel very cool and the compressor in your airconditioner (the main component that eats up dollars) won’t have to work as hard and your bills will be lower.
On a humid day, use the ‘Dry’ function (sometimes the icon is displayed as a cloud or umbrella) to reduce humidity in the air and allow your airconditioner to work more efficiently. You’ll end up with a much more comfortable living experience at home.
